About motenai

A practical guide, before the relationship starts

What this publication does

No one to meet. No reply. No idea what to wear. No nerve to say how you feel. The reason it did not work is different every time, yet most advice stops at “be more confident” and “just take action”.

motenai breaks the failure down into its parts and names one thing to try next. Instead of encouragement, we write the message to send, the order to fix things in, and how to structure the day.

We cover the stage before a relationship starts. What happens after it starts is covered by our sister publication loveren.

Articles are written in Japanese. A small number are translated into English.

What we cover

  • 01Meeting peopleDating apps, meetups, work, hobby communities — how to widen the pool of people you actually meet.
  • 02Grooming and presentationClothes, hair, body, skincare. Not about the face you were born with, but the parts upkeep can move.
  • 03MessagingWhat to send after a match, why replies stop, and how to restart a conversation without pressure.
  • 04Dates and confessionsPlanning a first date, what to talk about, when to say how you feel, and what happens after.
  • 05Psychology and self-esteemFear of rejection, over-expectation, and the habit of talking yourself down. The ground under the behaviour.

Our editorial rules

  • We do not promise outcomes. No article claims a method always works. Research and tendencies are described as tendencies.
  • We do not teach manipulation. Pickup-artist style techniques for steering someone into a decision are out of scope.
  • We do not rank people by their looks. Appearance articles cover only what upkeep and choice can change, and we do not write rules based on gender.
  • Every article ends with something to do. Not a mood, an action.

Supervision

Articles are drafted with the help of generative AI and reviewed before publication by our editors and by Yuho Ito (CEO, Walker Inc.; certified instructor, Japan Deep Learning Association), who checks each piece against the rules above.
